From the 1980's to his retirement in 2022 Roy Lawler was a mainstay in the custom trumpet and trombone worlds. His handcrafted instruments were prized by players for their colorful timbre, sonic stability and nimbleness of response. Based in Florida throughout the early to middle part of his building career Lawler partnered with Florida-based trombonist Herb Bruce to create a signature model, pairing unique aspects of the Lawler design with the performance preferences of Mr. Bruce.
This Lawler, dated to the early 2000's is in great condition and is the first of this era of Lawler builds to come through the shop; it features a .500" bore, lightweight 7.5" yellow brass bell, nickel silver outer handslide and a gold plated finish. The overall finish is 90%+; there is a small amount of gold plating wear on the inside of the bell but otherwise the plating is in excellent condition, with the lacquer on the handslide having only slight wear on the contact points. This trombone has a relatively compact but weighty sound, with a good deal of core and a timbre that is balanced between low/mid/upper overtones; it has an efficient response that pairs well with a relatively compact airflow and offers a nimble response but with stability. A unique and great-playing piece of American trombone heritage! Comes with Edwards hardshell case.
