Paul A. Schmitt

From Humble Beginnings to Musical Legacy

Schmitt Music was founded in 1896 by Paul A. Schmitt in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota as a sheet music retailer and publisher. Paul A. Schmitt’s passion for music and dedication to quality and service quickly earned the trust of musicians and educators alike. The early 20th century saw Schmitt Music becoming a cornerstone of the local music community, providing a wide selection of sheet music to meet the needs of professional musicians and amateur enthusiasts.

Expanding Horizons

As the demand for musical instruments grew with the advent of Jazz, Schmitt Music expanded its offerings to include a full line of musical instruments, records, accessories, and related products. The 1920s and 1930s marked a period of significant growth, with the company moving locations in downtown Minneapolis to the now-famous South 10th Street location.

By the mid-20th century, Schmitt Music had become a well-respected name in the music retail industry. The company’s knowledgeable staff and commitment to customer service set it apart from competitors, helping to foster a loyal customer base. In 1945, pianos were added to the inventory.

Partnership with Steinway & Sons

In 1960, Schmitt Music became the region's exclusive dealer for Steinway & Sons Pianos. This prestigious partnership marked a significant milestone in the company’s history, aligning Schmitt Music with one of the most respected names in the piano industry. Becoming a Steinway piano dealer allowed Schmitt Music to provide their customers with instruments of unparalleled quality and craftsmanship, further solidifying their reputation as a leading music retailer.

A Minneapolis Landmark

In the early 1970s, the side of Schmitt Music’s downtown location was deemed “unsightly” by local news commentator Barbara Flannigan. At her behest, the company bricked up 32 windows which became the canvas for the Music Wall Mural. This visually interesting selection from Maurice Ravel’s "Gaspard de la Nuit" has come to be internationally recognized, and a defining landmark of Minneapolis. Shortly after it was painted, the Music Wall was used as a backdrop for promotional photos for a rising local artist – Prince.

Leadership Across Generations

The Schmitt family has played a pivotal role in the company’s success over the years. Following the founding by Paul A. Schmitt, leadership passed to his son, Robert A. Schmitt, in 1935, who continued to expand the business and uphold the company’s reputation for quality and service. Subsequent generations of the Schmitt family, including Robert P. Schmitt in 1958 and Thomas M. (Tom) Schmitt in 1985, have led the company with the same dedication and vision. Their leadership ensures that Schmitt Music remains a family-owned business committed to the principles established by its founder.

Today, Schmitt Music is still family owned and operated by fifth-generation leadership in CEO Visionary Peter Schmitt, and Chief Financial Officer Ted Schmitt.
