One of the more unique members of the Conn trombone family, the 40H "Ballroom" model was in production from 1925-1934 and was designed with the needs of the ballroom orchestra trombonist in mind, featuring a 7" yellow brass bell (positioned closer to the player for easier mute access), a .500" bore handslide with tuning-in-slide and a silver-plated finish with inner bell gold wash.
By all appearances this 40H is in original condition. Outside of a few dents on the neckpipe it is ding and dent free and the silver plating, while tarnished, is in excellent condition overall (with instruments of this age we typically prefer to preserve the patina while on display) outside of moderate wear on the handslide brace contact points. The tuning-in-slide moves smoothly and while the inner handslide stockings have a moderate amount of chrome plating wear the overall slide action is 8/10.
This trombone in many ways is reminiscent of it’s sibling the 6H; it has a very natural and easy blow and a fairly dark and open timbre that projects with a wonderful resonance. The simplified tuning-in-slide mechanism doesn’t add a significant amount of weight to the handslide (in comparison to some newer TIS designs) and the instrument is overall very responsive with excellent response and slotting to the 12th partial and beyond. This would be a wonderful instrument for anyone looking for a .500” or even .508” instrument for ensemble or small group settings jazz or otherwise (i.e. period specific orchestra sections.) Comes with original hard case.
