Featuring guest artists in both clarinet and saxophone, this special event will focus on all things single reed. Join us on Saturday, April 29 with events beginning at 11am.

The Schmitt Music Clarinet Gallery and Saxophone Shop are excited to host their first joint Single Reed Day: From the Neck Up, on Saturday, April 29. The day will open with a joint recital at 11a by Clarinet Professor Robert DiLutis, a Buffet Artist from the University of Maryland and owner of The Reed Machine, and Dr. Matthew Patnode a Selmer artist from North Dakota State University. The day will highlight the different gear utilized by clarinetists and saxophonists to refine your sound and help find the best set up for your musical journey. Covering topics from reeds to ligatures to mouthpieces, it will be a day chocked full of fundamental knowledge and expertise on everything clarinet and saxophone related From the Neck Up.
After the opening recital, Robert DiLutis will provide a practical class on adjusting commercial reeds to show how to make every reed in a box work! No need to give up on a reed that’s too hard or too soft, learn how to manage each reed and make them ALL work for you. Dr. Matthew Patnode will give a class on the differences between classical and jazz set ups. Our headlining artists will be joined throughout the day with class offerings from Preston Duncan, Professor at the University of Minnesota and Legere artist, conducting a class on synthetic reeds, and Scott Kurtzweil of Conn-Selmer teaching a class on the anatomy of your mouthpiece, how adjustments translate to the playability of each mouthpiece, and will offer personalized mouthpiece re-facing and consultations for attendees.

Saxophonist Dr. Matthew Patnode is Professor of saxophone and jazz studies at North Dakota State University, where he teaches saxophone, jazz ensemble, and jazz improvisation. He performs regularly in both classical, jazz, and commercial genres. Dr. Patnode holds degrees and certificates from the State University of New York at Potsdam, the Conservatoire de Bordeaux, and Arizona State University, where his saxophone teachers have included James Stoltie, Joe Viola, Jean-Marie Londeix, and Joseph Wytko.
He has appeared as soloist with many community and college bands, and also as a clinician and adjudicator at many college jazz festivals throughout the U.S. He was recently a featured artist for the Regional Spotlight on Minnesota Public Radio, and also awarded the ND Jazz Educator of the Year in 2013.
Additionally, he serves as Region 3 director for the North American Saxophone Alliance and in on the faculty at the International Music Camp, in the Peace Gardens of North Dakota. As a member of the FM Jazz Arts Group, he has appeared on stage with artists such as Buddy DeFranco, Jimmy Heath, Slide Hampton, Allen Vizzutti, Buddy DeFranco, and Monty Alexander; and also has been in bands backing up vocalists Kurt Elling, Frankie Valli, Martha Reeves, Wayne Newton, The Temptations, and the Four Tops. Current musical projects include the NDSU faculty Boreas Trio (clarinet, saxophone, and piano), whose CD is to be released in 2023; the Fargo Saxophone Quartet, and the Post Traumatic Funk Syndrome.
Dr. Patnode is a Conn-Selmer artist and clinician.
Robert DiLutis is the Professor of Clarinet at the University of Maryland, College Park, and the Principal Clarinetist of the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra. DiLutis previously served as professor of clarinet at the Louisiana State University School of Music from 2009-2012. He has also held positions with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, San Antonio Symphony Orchestra and the Eastman School of Music. DiLutis has served on the faculties of St. Mary's University in Texas and Nazareth College in New York. His recent recitals and masterclasses have included the University of Georgia, University of California at Northridge, University of South Carolina, Catholic University of America and the International Clarinet Conference in Assisi, Italy.
Born in Baltimore, MD, to a family of musicians, DiLutis studied first at the Peabody Conservatory with William Blayney and later at the Juilliard School with David Weber, principal clarinetist of the NYC Ballet. In 1989 he made his Carnegie Hall Recital debut as the winner of the Artist International Chamber Music Competition. As a soloist, DiLutis has performed with ensembles such as the San Antonio Symphony, LSU Wind Ensemble, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra. DiLutis has performed and toured with the New York Philharmonic and is currently co-director of the Clarinet Academy of America, an intensive summer program for advanced clarinetists in high school and college. In 2013, DiLutis created a new chamber music series at the historic Riversdale House Museum in Riverdale, MD, and was awarded a 2014 & 2018 Individual Performing Artist Grant from the Maryland State Council for the Arts.
