What is Expo?

Schmitt Music’s EXPO is once again LIVE and in-person for our 86th year celebrating new music! Join us Monday, August 7 and Tuesday, August 8 for a selection of events featuring exceptional local composers in the choral and piano worlds.

Join us for presentations by Kathryn Karg, Kevin Olson, Dennis Alexander, Mark Cabaniss and Lloyd Larson! This year, we are debuting a BRAND NEW handbell reading session! Don’t miss out on the fun. We are looking for volunteers to play handbells for read-through – see you there!

Monday, August 7th Schedule:

8:30AM-10AM: Kathryn Karg - Taking your students to the next level


Our newest published composer, Kathryn Karg, will showcase some of her piano compositions that are on the MMTA '24 contest list as well as her favorites (solos and duets). She will also share her journey, which is an introspective look on how to take your students to the next level to have a future career in music.

10AM-12PM: Kevin Olson - Kickoff for Fun Fall Teaching: New Publications by Kevin Olson


In concert hall

Composer Kevin Olson showcases his new piano compositions from FJH, CCC Music Publications, and Hal Leonard. Selections include new books, holiday music, and duets!

1PM-2:30PM: Dennis Alexander - Best of Dennis Alexander


Over the years, Dennis Alexander has written hundreds of solos and collections for students of all ages. This session explores some of the very best works at all levels from his library of teaching materials.

2:45PM-4:30PM: Dennis Alexander - Why Didn't I Think of That


Over the years, Dennis Alexander has received hundreds of questions from piano teachers at workshops, conventions, and through correspondence. This session will provide answers to questions that deal with technique, motivation, repertoire, rhythm, artistry, memorization, teaching adults, and other issues that every teacher must deal with, regardless of the level of the student.

9AM-12PM: Mark Cabaniss - Choral Reading Session


Join renowned composer and clinician Mark Cabaniss as he introduces exciting new choral publications from Jubilate Music Group. Includes selections for SATB, SAB, and 2-part choirs from composers like Joseph M. Martin, Ruth Elaine Schram, Tom Fettke, and more!

1PM-4PM: Lloyd Larson - Choral Reading Session


In concert hall

Celebrated composer and clinician Lloyd Larson introduces new choral publications from Hal Leonard, Lorenz, and Hope Publishing. Includes selections for SATB, SAB, and 2-part choirs from composers like John Purifoy, Stan Pethel, Mary McDonald, Joel Raney, and more!

4:15PM-5:45PM: Lloyd Larson - Handbell Reading Session


For the first time at the Schmitt Music Expo, join us for a handbell choir new music reading session with Lloyd Larson! Featuring new publications from Hope Publishing and Jubilate Music Group. The sessions will feature publications from Brenda Austin, Cynthia Dobrinski, and Ron Mallory.
