Carmichael is a Grammy-nominated jazz pianist and vocalist, specializing in “stride piano,” a physical style of playing first made popular by Fats Waller. She is the host of nationally syndicated Judy Carmichael’s Jazz Inspired, an NPR and Sirius/XM show that debuted in 1993, and her memoir Swinger! A Jazz Girl’s Adventures from Hollywood to Harlem is out now!

Count Basie nicknamed her “Stride,” for conquering this technically and physically demanding early jazz piano style and celebrated jazz writer, Gary Giddins sagely observed the ironic fact that “the last man standing, in this private, competitive domain, is a woman.” Pianist.
