Bravo, Kenneth Broberg, bronze winner at The International Tchaikovsky Competition

Schmitt Music would like to say BRAVO and congratulations to Kenneth “Kenny” Broberg, winner of a Bronze Medal at The XVI International Tchaikovsky Competition in the piano category!

Held every four years in Russia, the prestigious event is referred to by some as “the Olympics” of piano competitions. Mr. Broberg was one of just two Americans in the competition, and the only American to reach the finals! Enjoy this clip of Kenny’s performance during the 2nd round at this year’s competition:

Congratulations to all competing performers!

Twenty five contestants attended auditions in the piano category at the Great Hall of the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory, and the winners in the XVI International Tchaikovsky Competition piano category are:

  • First Prize and Gold Medal: Alexandre Kantorow (France)
  • Second Prize and Silver Medal: Dmitriy Shishkin (Russia) and Mao Fujita (Japan)
  • Third Prize and Bronze Medal: Alexey Melnikov (Russia), Kenneth Broberg (USA), Konstantin Yemelyanov (Russia)
  • Fourth Prize and Diploma: Tianxu An (China)

Kenny Broberg, 25 and a Minneapolis native, was a student of Dr. Joseph Zins at Crocus Hill Studios in St. Paul from the age of 6 through high school. Afterwards, he enrolled at the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree with Nancy Weems in 2016. Mr. Broberg currently studies with Steinway Artist (and 2001 Cliburn Gold Medalist) Stanislav Ioudenitch at Park University’s International Center for Music in Parkville, MO.

In 2017, Broberg took home the silver medal at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Interestingly, Van Cliburn was the gold medal winner at the inaugural International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1958.

Just a few months before his appearance at the Cliburn, Mr. Broberg presented a program at the Schmitt Music Edina Auditorium in early 2017. We hope to see him in the Twin Cities again soon!

Music fans in the Greater Kansas City area will have a chance to see Kenny perform soon, as he’ll be featured in “Stanislav & Friends: An Intimate Evening for the Benefit of Park International Center for Music” – coming on September 20th. CLICK HERE to learn more about this premier ICM gala!
