Dr. Grigor Khachatryan will perform solo piano pieces, and will listen to area piano students and offer instructive comments to improve their performance. Everyone is welcome to attend and listen to this fascinating process!

Dr. Grigor Khachatryan is recognized as a prominent soloist, chamber musician, composer and pedagogue. Khachatryan is Assistant Professor of Piano at Concordia College, Moorhead. In addition to applied piano lessons, he also teaches piano literature and piano pedagogy courses and serves as the coordinator of the secondary piano area. Khachatryan is also the director of the annual Concordia Piano Competition and Concordia Midwinter Piano Festival.
Khachatryan’s solo and chamber repertoire is vast, with works ranging from J.S.Bach to György Ligeti. As a prizewinner of major international piano competitions such as the Cincinnati World Piano Competition, the Russian International Piano Competition, the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra Competition, Arabkir National Piano Competition of Yerevan, the Elite Generation Armenian National Competition, Khachatryan has performed concerti of Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Schumann, Brahms, Grieg and Tchaikovsky throughout the world. He recently toured nationally with Concordia Symphony Orchestra performing Rachmaninoff’s 3rd Piano Concerto.
Khachatryan is greatly loved and respected by the global Armenian diaspora. In 2014, he was invited to perform in Carnegie Hall by the Armenian General Benevolent Union of New York City. He has been recognized as an outstanding young talent by the Jacobs School of Music’s piano faculty while receiving a nomination for a Performance Certificate. Additional honors include being unanimously accepted into the world-class and extremely selective doctorate program at the Jacobs School of Music in 2011 as one of three candidates worldwide.
Born in Yerevan, Armenia, Khachatryan began his musical studies at Barsej Kanachyan’s Music School of Yerevan. Shortly thereafter, Khachatryan moved to the United States and continued his musical development at the prestigious Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University under the tutelage of distinguished professor of piano, Luba Edlina-Dubinsky, where he earned his Bachelor, Master, and Performer Diploma degrees. In addition, Khachatryan holds a doctorate degree in Piano Performance, Composition and Music Theory from the Jacobs School of Music. During his graduate studies, he served as Junior Faculty of Piano at the Jacobs School of Music, where he taught undergraduate and graduate piano courses.
Khachatryan’s mentors include Evelyne Brancart, Karen Shaw, Edmund Battersby, Jean-Louis Haguenauer, Emile Naoumoff, Elizabeth Wright, Arnaldo Cohen, Shigeo Neriki, Kevork Mardirossian, Mark Kaplan, Janos Starker, Emilio Colón, Jamie Laredo, Jorja Fleezanis, Mimi Zweig, Bryan Ganz, Sharon Robinson, Carlos Montane, P. Q. Phan, and Don Freud.
Khachatryan’s compositions have been premiered throughout the United States. He is currently working on recording his two large-scale piano sonatas; “David of Sasun” and “Battle of Avarayr” with Albany Records. Khachatryan’s dissertation was published in 2015 titled “GYÖRGY LIGETI’S DÉSORDRE: MUSICAL CHAOS ACHIEVED WITH ORDER”
