Schmitt Music invites you to attend a presentation by John Patton, Vice President of Steinway & Sons and President of Boston and Essex Operations. Join us at Schmitt Music Edina on Thursday, October 26 at 10:30AM.

An industry veteran of over 40 years, Mr. Patton has very in depth knowledge of piano manufacturing, engineering, and spent over half of his career in the piano technical field. Mr. Patton is now in charge of Steinway’s Boston and Essex products from sourcing, quality, product development, and marketing. He will be speaking about the development of the pianos, what “Designed by Steinway & Sons” really means, and how Steinway has gone about assuring quality and consistency in the products. John Patton entered the piano industry in 1978, joining the Aeolian Corporation, manufacturer of Mason & Hamlin, Chickering, and Knabe pianos in Rochester, NY. He has held Senior Management positions with this manufacturer and others in the US over the next 20 years, and has served as a consultant to many other International piano companies.

In 1998, he was hired by Steinway & Sons in New York to become the Director of Technical Services at Steinway, managing the Customer Service Department, Retail and Concert Technicians, and Parts Department for Steinway & Sons US operations.

From 2005-2017 he has lived and worked in Shanghai as President of Steinway Piano (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. In this capacity, he was responsible for Marketing, Sales, Distribution, Service, and Logistics for the Steinway’s operations in China, Hong Kong, and Macao. During his tenure Steinway’s business in China has experienced significant growth and is now represented in 43 cities throughout China. In 2013 he was promoted to Vice President, Steinway & Sons and President of Boston and Essex Operations. In this capacity he oversees product development, OEM manufacturing and sourcing, quality assurance, and engineering for the Boston and Essex products.
