Last month at the NAMM show we had the chance to catch up with Michael Corrigan and BAC Musical Instruments. Michael and his team have been on the cutting edge of trombone design for a few years now and some of his latest models are a reflection of the hard work he has been putting in. After our conversations Michael was able to send a couple of models in our direction for one of the local pros and we had the chance to spend some time with them.

The Elliot Mason artist model from BAC has garnered much attention not only for the way Elliot makes it dance and sing but for it’s unique design and appearance. As one might expect this is a weighty instrument but the bracing system is remarkably comfortable and the horn balances well in the hand. This model included the interchangable bell flair to allow for material and thickness customization. The handslide has heavy-duty barrels with nickel silver outer tubes and a yellow brass crook. While the instrument has substantial weight the response is quick and light with a balanced sound and lots of core.

We also had the chance to take a play on one of BAC’s Custom Classic models. This model featured a 7.5 inch yellow brass bell, yellow brass handslide and the signature BAC counterweight on the reverse tuning slide. We had a chance to do a recording with this model; take a listen below to hear for yourself!
