We'll work in partnership with you to create a quality instrumental music program for your private, parochial or home school students.

Schmitt's began the STRIKE UP THE BAND program in 1965 to bring music to metro area children in private and parochial schools where a full-time band director was not feasible. In 1992 the program expanded to help home school families allow their children to participate in group music.

Let us help give your children the experience of learning to play a band instrument. Weekly lessons, weekly band rehearsals and concert performances provide the group music experience so important to every child's complete education!

Parents, Director, School and Schmitt Music all play an important part in providing the Strike Up the Band experience for children!

• Pay the monthly tuition to Schmitt Music.

• Encourage your child by providing a comfortable place to practice, praise for good practices, and an appreciative audience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does my child need to be able to read music to join?
A: No, the director will teach your child how to read music, how to play the instrument, and how to handle and care for the instrument.

Q: What's the ideal age for my child to begin band?
A: Fourth grade is an ideal age to begin band. Children in fifth and sixth grades are also at great ages to begin playing a musical instrument.

Q: How much should my child practice?
A: Practice time varies from individual to individual. 15-30 minutes daily is often suggested for beginners. We suggest scheduling a regular daily practice time.

Q: How did you determine the instrument that was recommended for my child?
A: After an instrument demonstration, your child was asked to think about which instruments s/he preferred. Various factors are considered - the shape of the mouth and teeth, the ability to coordinate the facial muscles, and physical size for potential wind players. For potential percussionists, factors such as hand/eye coordination and rhythmic memory are considered. With these factors and your child's personal preference, a recommendation was made to help you and your child choose an instrument that they will be successful in learning to play.

Q: I don't have an instrument. Will my child be provided with one?
A: Families are asked to provide students with an instrument. If you do not have an instrument, Schmitt Music has several options to help you acquire an excellent student model instrument at a reasonable cost.
