Kelly Mickelson Percussion Clinic

Time to Move and Discover the Groove!

Drummer Kelly Mickelson is your guide to discover different rhythmic worlds on an interactive “Rhythm Power Adventure”! The clinic will consist of a combination of groove tune performances by Kelly and interactive exercises where participants will learn creative rhythmic skills & groove awareness, which improves overall musicality. Participants will have the unique opportunity to play a variety of parts in a group setting, directly with Kelly playing exciting grooves on both wood and electronic drum sets. The length of the session is 90 minutes, with approximately 50% participation time by all attendees.

Saturday, October 20th from 3pm – 4:30pm
$50 fee (includes materials)

Kelly Mickelson is an award-winning performer recognized in the national Jazz publication Downbeat Magazine, and has performed in the US and Japan. He holds a Masters in Music Performance and has competed at the national level on classical marimba as well. Twin Cities performances have included gigs with notable local artists such as blues singer Big John Dickerson, B3 organ legend Billy Holloman, and the Hot Summer Jazz Festival as a group leader, to name a few. Kelly currently teaches percussion at Schmitt Music Edina.

Teacher Employment Fair at Edina music store

EMPLOYMENT FAIR for MUSIC LESSON TEACHERS

Schmitt Music Edina will be hosting an employment fair for all Twin Cities musicians interested in teaching in-store lessons on Thursday, May 10 from 11am to 6pm.

Interested musicians with teaching experience can simply walk-in during the fair and meet with Schmitt Music Lesson Coordinators from our various stores. We’ll be interviewing for private lesson positions, as well as positions in our school programs (Orchestra Continuo, Strike Up The Band) and group experiences such as Rock Star Academy, Small-Stars, Group Guitar and more.

During your interview, you will be asked to play a short 2-3 minute excerpt of a musical piece on the primary instrument you’re applying to teach. Applications are available online – CLICK HERE to download the application.

Please print and complete the application and bring a copy to your interview, or drop it off in advance at your preferred Schmitt Music store. Applicants may also include a resume, and if possible, please include up to 3 letters of recommendation. References should be listed in your application. Applicants should be willing to submit to a criminal background check.

Hiring preference will be given to instructors available to teach noon to 5pm on Saturdays & Sundays, or weekdays from 10am to 2pm. Limited lesson studio space does exist for those who prefer to teach Monday-Thursday from 2pm to 9pm. Availability varies by Schmitt Music location. Slovczech In-store Peformance

Join us for a FREE performance by local folk rock band Slovczech, featuring Schmitt Music Edina teacher Aurora Adamson.

Thursday, April 12 at 7pm – Schmitt Music Edina

SLOVCZECH is a group of musicians, who love to share joy of Central and Eastern European folk music. The band started in 2008 in Minneapolis. It initially focused on dance music, which would serve Czech and Slovak communities in Midwest US.

Gradually, the band profiled into more concert oriented, modern sounding folk rock formation, heavily influenced by central european bands Cechomor, Dikanda and Kroke.

SLOVCZECH currently features:
Aurora Adamson – fiddle, mandolin and vocal
Petr Bachan – guitar, keyboards and vocal
Jozef Klobusnik – accordion and vocal
Lubor Manolov – guitar and vocal

SLOVCZECH band also regularly features children from Czech and Slovak families, who play and sing during occasions – St. Nicholas, Christmas and Easter.

During last 3 years, SLOVCZECH performed several times at Festival of Nations, St. Paul, MN; Minnesota Sokol Days; Dozinky Days in New Prague,MN; Cedar Rapid BrewNost and Milwaukee Sokol. SLOVCZECH also performed solo concerts at Harriet Lake Band Shell as a part of Twin Cities Music in the Park summer series.

 

Ashworth Low Brass eventJoin us for a FREE Low Brass Clinic with Tom Ashworth, Professor of Trombone at the University of Minnesota School of Music. He’ll share career experiences and explore the “Fundamentals of Low Brass Teaching and Performance”.

Topics include posture/fitness, breathing, inhalation, exhalation, embouchure, note-shapes and stability, mouthpiece buzzing, tone, intonation, technique, flexibility/lip slurs, tonguing/articulation/diction and more fundamentals.

Stomp your feet to the beat of the boogie-woogie and barrelhouse-based piano style of John Paul Donahue II, at this FREE in-store performance at the new Schmitt Music Edina!

John Paul will discuss his own musical developement, focusing on the challenges and joys of relentlessly pursuing your musical journey. You will leave inspired, possessing the “keys” to unlocking and discovering your own musical voice.

John Paul has performed at various venues including the Eau Claire Ragtime Festival, the MSP airport, and Menards in Eden Prairie. He is an in-store teacher at the Edina, who’s been sharing his music for 14 years. This has led to teaching piano for the past 3 years. He enjoys the challenge of unmasking each person’s innate musical expression with the goal of having each student play the music from his or her heart. He is well versed in many styles and focuses on Boogie Woogie, Blues, Ragtime/Stride, and Improvising.

 

Sean O’Shea is an Inspirational Pianist, Singer, Songwriter and Speaker. He has twice opened for Dr. Wayne W. Dyer and has appeared live on ABC’s “Good Morning America”. He is active in the Nashville music scene and is a host of coffeehouse events featuring both established and up-and-coming performing songwriters. Sean frequently performs concerts and workshops for Kawai across the country.
