An Evening with the Artist… Nationally renowned, Grammy Award winning, Steinway Artist – Minnesota’s own Butch Thompson.

Butch starts with the best of the early jazz piano repertoire, then builds his concerts carefully with just enough commentary — laced with his dry humor — to give his audience a sense of the tradition he’s exploring. His reach is wide, from classic ragtime by Scott Joplin to New Orleans stomps and tangos by Jelly Roll Morton, lyrical blues and boogie woogie from southside Chicago, roaring Harlem stride by Fats Waller, early solos by Duke Ellington, and more.

Among Thompson’s many recordings is his acclaimed 10-volume solo series on Daring/Rounder and the 1997 Grammy-winning Verve release Doc Cheatham and Nicholas Payton.

Heralded as a “technically impeccable and musically profound” pianist, Steinway Artist Andrew Cooperstock performs widely as soloist and chamber musician and has appeared throughout six continents and in most of the fifty states. A graduate of the Juilliard School and the Cincinnati and Peabody Conservatories, Dr. Cooperstock studied with Abbey Simon, David Bar-Illan, and Walter Hautzig, as well as with collaborative pianist Samuel Sanders. He is currently a senior member of the keyboard faculty at the University of Colorado at Boulder and chair of the piano department at Rocky Ridge Music Center.

Christopher O’Riley is well-known for his eloquent and compelling musings on music and popular culture. His latest performances stretch the piano beyond the classical repertoire and into the rich uncharted territory of contemporary and alt-rock. The music flows seamlessly from one genre to another, from the familiar to the fresh. Out Of My Hands, includes music of R.E.M., Portishead, Cocteau Twins, Pink Floyd, Nirvana, The Bad Plus, The Smiths, Tears for Fears as well as material from Radiohead and Elliott Smith.

Schmitt Music is delighted to present a recital and reception in honor of Dr. Jane Solose, our area’s newest Steinway Artist! Dr. Solose will present a sampling of some of the best-loved works by Chopin and Liszt.
